About Northern Virginia
Swimming League

The Northern Virginia Swimming League was founded in 1956 to sponsor competitive swimming and diving events and activities among community swimming pools of Northern Virginia, and to develop in the children participating in this program…

A love for the sport, advanced aquatic skills, teamwork, and the principles of good sportsmanship."

With its deep community roots, multigenerational traditions, and emphasis on developing a love of the sport, NVSL has become a defining part of summertime for thousands of families — and a nationally recognized model of community-based youth athletics.

NVSL: A Community Phenomenon Rooted in Fun, Family, and Lifelong Impact

Summer swimming in Northern Virginia isn't simply a sport — it's a cultural institution. Every year from late May through early August, tens of thousands of children take to the water, supported by parents, volunteers, and coaches who dedicate their summers to making the experience fun, uplifting, and unforgettable.

“The League has taken a recreational sport in the summertime and made it a competitive and social phenomenon,” says NVSL President Chris Campbell, who has been involved with the league for more than 50 years, as a swimmer, coach, team rep, parent, and board member.

We take an individual sport and make it a team event — families and kids of all ages competing and having fun together"

From early-morning practices to dual meets, relay carnivals, division championships, and the elite All-Star competitions, NVSL builds both athletes and leaders. The league’s environment emphasizes:

Team spirit, competition, and tradition

Family involvement

from timers, to deck marshals, to concession crews

Leadership development

as young swimmers grow into coaches, mentors, and role models

Fun

a crucial pillar that keeps kids returning year after year

This supportive structure has shaped generations of young people, giving them not only athletic skills but also discipline, confidence, time-management abilities, and community pride.

NVSL’s supportive culture and strong coaching tradition have helped shape generations of athletes — from college standouts and record-setting high school swimmers to national competitors and Olympians. Many began in the same summer league setting that thousands of NVSL children enjoy today, grounded in fun, friendship, and community.

First, thank you once again to our 2025 All Star meet hosts: All Star Relays co-hosts Lincolnia Park and Tuckahoe and Individual All Star host Pinecrest. We sincerely appreciate your hard work, commitment and service to the NVSL community. You provided outstanding hospitality to the swimmers, coaches, volunteers and families of the League and excellent venues for our All Stars to compete.

We are excited to announce the host for the 2026 All Star Relay meet, Sleepy Hollow Bath & Racquet (SHBR). We are going to have an outstanding MORNING start to our All Star Relay meet on Wednesday, July 15. We are equally excited to announce the host for our 2026 Individual All Star meet, Vienna Woods (VW). We can't wait to end our season "in the Woods" on Saturday, August 1. Please join the League in extending our sincere thanks to the SHBR and VW communities for stepping up to host this year.

As you plan your summer and swim season commitments, please consider dedicating some time to volunteer at an All Star meet. There's no better way to say thank you to our hosts and show your support for the All Star meets by volunteering! Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring the meets run smoothly and safely for our athletes and meet attendees. Watch for messages from your Team Reps or Division Coordinators, or reach out to asknvsl@gmail.com if you'd like to serve as a volunteer.

We are ready to get to work with Sleepy Hollow Bath & Racquet and Vienna Woods on the 2026 All Star meets. With the support of pools and volunteers from across the League, we continue the tradition of celebrating our swimmers and their talents and sportsmanship. Our calendar is complete and we are going to have another fun and fast summer of swimming in the NVSL!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to our wonderful NVSL community! It's 2026 and we are planning another great season for our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families. You may have heard... the NVSL is moving to SwimTopia for both team and meet management! We're excited to implement Meet Maestro to help run meets more smoothly and efficiently. Team Reps will be getting communications throughout the winter and spring regarding the transition so please make sure your contacts are updated and please check those team emails periodically. Email asknvsl@gmail.com with any changes.

The Annual Seeding Meeting is locked in for Sunday March 1 as well as NVSL University on Saturday May 30. We expect to make the Officials Certification/Recertification training schedule available no later than the Seeding Meeting. Important update for 2026 - all training clinics will be held in person this spring and summer. We are not holding any virtual recertification clinics.

Check the calendar tab of the website for 2026 meet dates - the first dual meet of the season wil be held Saturday June 20 and we wrap up the season on Saturday August 1 with the Individual All Star meet. Specific team schedules will be shared at the Seeding Meeting and posted to the website (and your team SwimTopia page!) later in March. The board will be discussing the 2027 schedule over the winter and we expect to have it finalized in time for this year's Seeding Meeting.
